Dr. M. Dhiwakar is a leading expert in Thyroid, Head & Neck and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. He has trained extensively in various leading centers in India, UK and USA and is the author of several high impact publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is a Cochrane author and reviewer, and applies the latest evidence-based approach and surgical techniques in treating diseases related to ear, nose, throat and head & neck. He is a pioneer in the concept of selective neck dissection for thyroid as well as other head and neck cancers. This new, minimally invasive approach involves a smaller incision, less extensive surgery, faster healing and quick discharge to home. His expertise is much sought after by patients from within India and abroad. 

Special expertise: Surgery for tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid, mouth, throat (pharynx), larynx (voice box), neck, parotid and other salivary glands; and endoscopic sinus surgery for polyps, sinusitis and skull base tumors.

Details of training

2008-2010: Advanced Head & Neck Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Southern Illinois University, USA, under the mentorship of Drs. K. T. Robbins and J. Malone, who are world leaders in Head & Neck, Thyroid and Endoscopic Skull base Surgery. This fellowship program has been approved by the American Head & Neck Society.

2003-2008: Higher Surgical Trainee (Type I Specialist Registrar) on the East of Scotland training program at Inverness (2003-2005) and Edinburgh (2005-2008). Trained with renowned faculty such as I. Ganly, R.J Sanderson, G. Vernham and S. Denholm for Head & Neck; G. MacDougall, A. J. Cain and A. Williams for Endoscopic Sinus and Skull base; and W. S. McKerrow, R. Mills and D. Sim for Ear surgery. Obtained all essential credentials for award of Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).

2000-2003: Senior House Officer in General Surgery and Neurosurgery in India and UK. 

1997-2000: Resident in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), N. Delhi, India. Obtained an all-India rank of 4 to enter this prestigious center. Worked under internationally renowned faculty such as Drs. S. Bahadur and A. Thakar in clinical otolaryngology as well as research.

1991-1997: MBBS at Madras Medical College, Chennai, India. 

Merits and awards

1. Gold medal in pathology in MBBS (1995).

2. First prize in the ENT Quiz conducted by the Delhi branch of Association of Otolaryngologists of India, 2000.

3. Young Scientist gold medal (Mukut-Saharia award) for presentation of best research paper (on fungal sinusitis) at the Annual meet of the Delhi branch of Association of Otolaryngologists of India, 2000.

4. Included in the 2005 edition of Marquis Who’s Who of world achievers and 2006 edition of Marquis Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders and Marquis Who’s Who in Asia.
